Said and Done

Written on August 15, 2007

Hello, the last 48 hours has been a bit crazy for BuiltWith.com, it started off with RW/W posting us on their site and culminated in the #1 spot on Digg / All Topics for a brief period. I was a little skeptical about the ‘digg effect’ but when it happened I definitely noticed; it was a bit like a denial of service attack!

The reality is that after all this traffic there has to be a reason to come back to the site, and this is what we are working on. A lot of feedback has been gathered thank you to everyone that sent it in. Here’s some feedback of the feedback -

Accuracy of Results
The BuiltWith system only works by being able to find identifiers in the header, cookie or body of a GET request on the URL that is looked up. This is why frameworks such as Ruby on Rails are not always found. The FAQ has more information about this. There may be no solution from a robot lookup perspective to fix this, however, features to add this kind of information to a site will be available soon. One great thing to come out of all the thousands of lookup is a wealth of data to scour to find more web technologies to report back.

Statistics
The statistics that BuiltWith comes back with at the moment are only a fraction of the potential that all the information gathering can unleash. We are beginning the work on a really cool stats interface that will provide you with some great research tools for web technology.

API
To keep in the web 2.0 scheme of things an API is being provide to do XML style lookups on the BuiltWith system to allow developers to access the information generated by BuiltWith for consumption elsewhere.

There’s a lot of work to do and unfortunately not enough free time to do it in, bare with us! Thanks for your interest in BuiltWith

Great service, and VERY useful. I hope that you continue to expand your product… and eventually be able to provide a look into all the technologies being used on a searched website.

(Right down to modules and plugins for particular CMS…)
